Dart rules and scoring

·3 min reading

If you start playing darts, the most important are three things: understand scoring on the dartboard, know how to count down in the game 501 and set the dartboard in the correct distance. Below you will find practical rules without tournament jargon.

Dart Rules in Brief

  • The most popular game is 501: you start with 501 points and subtract the score of each queue.
  • One line is a maximum of 3 darts.
  • The winner is the person who first goes down to exactly 0.
  • In classic 501, it ends in a double field, or so-called double out.
  • If you exceed 0, you leave 1 point or hit a field that doesn't finish the leg correctly, the queue is burned and the result returns to the state before this queue.

Scoring on the dart dartboard

dartboard's got 1 to 20 fields. A large single field counts the number value, a narrow outer ring is a double value, and a narrow inner ring is a triple value. The center of the dartboard consists of an outer bull for 25 points and a bullseye for 50 points.

How do I count the score in 501?

After each queue, you subtract the sum of up to three throws from the current score. Example: you have 501, you throw T20, 20 and 5, which is 85 points. After the line, 416 is left. At the end, you have to plan a descent so that the last dart hits a double field.

Double out, which is how to end a leg

If there are 40 points left, the simplest descent is D20. At 32 points, you often choose D16, because when you make a mistake in a single 16, you stay 16, or D8. The beginners are helped by remembering several convenient tips: 40, 32, 24, 20 and 16.

dartboard setting and distance

For steel dart, the height of the center of the dartboard 173 cm from the floor and the distance of the projection 237 cm from the centre of the dartboard is most often taken. If you are playing the electronic soft dial, check the manual of the dartboard or the rules of the venue because other settings meet.

What do I buy for the start?

The best set to start is a simple set: sisal dartboard, a set of steel darts and spare flights and shafts. If you're playing at home and you want to protect the wall, you could use a tire for the dartboard. The ready-made sets are the most convenient because they contain the equipment chosen to start the game without separate assembly of elements.
